Behind the Zines #1

I sent out some 22 copies of the first issue of The Oblivionspin Occasionally on Monday. Just 5 days ago, although it seems like 50. The interest and support has been overwhelming, even though only one person besides myself has seen it yet.

I'm fiddling with content for the second issue, really hoping people enjoy the first, and I already ran into a major issue.

My life is not lighthearted.

Anecdotes I thought would be charming need content warnings. I'm quarantining upsetting conversations to companion minizines. Sitting here anxiously wondering what planned features I need to scrap.

I am the creator, editor, marketing, distribution and everything for this teeny tiny magazine. Any expectations people have for it so far are purely based on their perception of my personality. It isn't a question of who this project is for- nah that's easy- people who are interested in what I have to say, people who see what I do online and like what they see.

I've just got to ponder the existential question: who do people think I am?

  1. We've all got a dark side, sharing stories helps others put their own in some kind of perspective..? You are a storyteller.

    1. "Perspective"... that is a good way to think about it. I've been pondering a lot o what I expect a reader to get out of my writing (creative non fiction writing especially). Perspective is probably one of the many answers.

I think this is the first time I have ever been tasked with thinking "why would someone want to read this?"

  2. "Why would someone ever be interested in my -fill in the blank- " has been an ongoing thought of mine from way back. Mostly I don't care these days...

post & pride

I am the most begrudging "content creator" ever.  Oh sure, I love making things; I'm writing non stop. But keeping up with the blur and rush of social media and having a website (or a so two thousand and eight blogspot ) is maddening. It is so incredibly unfortunate that when I make things I have to communicate that to people instead of just throwing my manuscript or zine or whatever out the door, trusting word will get out.  In that vein- I was featured on the Hello America Lit summer collection, you can check out my very short track  here.  I'm thrilled to have been included on the mix.  Spoken word and readings of my work is something I want to get into a lot more, but have been intimidated by such minor details of webhosting and sound quality. I recorded that story with a cardboard box on top of my head and no one has complained about it yet (except my best friend who said my voice sounded 'different').  I am not making any vows of blogging regularly, b...

The Dinosaurs - Follow Up

Since people are starting to get their copies of vol. 1 iss. 1, here's a little extra. The Memory Tourist series are all based off of my memories, sometimes flawed. "The Dinosaurs", however, is not flawed in the slightest. After about 5 minutes on google maps, I present to you all... well, the dinosaurs. I still do not have any answers as to "what the fuck?"

An Anachronism in the Making

In 2012 I wrote a poem I never finished, titled Perhaps.  Oh, I made the start of a series of mini zines of it, I edited it, I reimagined, revisited and revised it- but I never truly finished it.  "Perhaps" started in a small square book I made- pocket sized, and was written by hand in a scrawl wherever inspiration struck me over the course of a spring month or so. If ever I stalled on what to write next, I just wrote the word "Perhaps" again and saw where it went from there.  It was one of those poems I considered to be my magnum opus- and I still hold some of the different versions (which never got the exposure to the world that they deserved) in high regard.  But this blog post is not about "Perhaps" it is not entitled "Perhaps" and I still have not given up on my to do list that "Perhaps" will have its moment.  This post is about "An Anachronism in the Making" That's more like it. In 2016 I was in my art and writing r...
