the zine

The Oblivion Spin Occasionally is a spiritual successor to a monthly newsletter I made and displayed on the counter of my 4th grade classroom.

The project began in late March of 2020. Issues will come out... occasionally. The goal is quarterly-ish.

At this time, the zine features art and writing by yours truly, as well as intermittent help from guests and friends of the zine! Issues average around 32 pages. 

Re-occurring content includes: creative non fiction excerpts from my "Memory Tourist" project, Dear Met, Interviews and the End Poem. Other features will be experimented with, so if you see one you like, please send in your feedback.

If you want to get involved with the zine by sending in a "Dear Met" letter, letter to the editor, anonymous feedback or anything else you can think of, get in touch using one of the methods in the "keep in touch" tab or tag your instagram posts with #oblivionspinoccasionally

Zines can be purchased on my etsy MdotTinsleyWorks in digital and (a limited amount of) physical formats.

I am the most begrudging "content creator" ever.  Oh sure, I love making things; I'm writing non stop. But keeping up with the blur and rush of social media and having a website (or a so two thousand and eight blogspot ) is maddening. It is so incredibly unfortunate that when I make things I have to communicate that to people instead of just throwing my manuscript or zine or whatever out the door, trusting word will get out.  In that vein- I was featured on the Hello America Lit summer collection, you can check out my very short track  here.  I'm thrilled to have been included on the mix.  Spoken word and readings of my work is something I want to get into a lot more, but have been intimidated by such minor details of webhosting and sound quality. The Dinosaurs - Follow Up

Since people are starting to get their copies of vol. 1 iss. 1, here's a little extra. The Memory Tourist series are all based off of my memories, sometimes flawed. "The Dinosaurs", however, is not flawed in the slightest. After about 5 minutes on google maps, I present to you all... well, the dinosaurs. I still do not have any answers as to "what the fuck?"

Concept vs Execution

I am only finishing up the 3rd issue now, so I guess I cannot confidently say I have a "way" or "method" of making the zines yet. Hell, even starting a sentence with "usually" seems a little odd, because again, the zine is just starting to take its first wibbly wobbly steps. So let's go with a semi scientific classification and say that early experiments suggest-  the first thing I do when I start an issue is make a big dumb document for all the content. If not multiple documents within a folder.  I pick and choose and cut a lot before I even make my first print out. Then I make a print out and do some laying out by hand. Then I go back to the computer. Then I go back to the scissors and glue stick.  then it's a mystery. I end up with weird blank pages due to layouts, sometimes I can pull in more content or collab for a spread. But when you have just one stray blank page what do you do with it? no idea.
